Course: “Emotions and Images: Using Psychology to Inform Our Photography”

PLEASE NOTE – THIS COURSE IS FULLY BOOKED

    Sat 20 Jul 2024 – Sat 27 Jul 2024, Oxford

    Overview

This course explores ways of conveying emotions through photography. 150 years ago, Darwin published “On the Expression of Emotions…” and, in 1908, Titchener introduced the concept of ‘empathy’. Drawing on contemporary insights from psychology, anthropology, and sociology, we attempt to apply these practically.

Through daily workshops, Oxford locations, and exciting practical activities, we develop ways to provoke an emotional response with photography, consider the implications of doing so, and reflect on the opportunities that this presents. Whether you have a sophisticated DSLR, or prefer a smartphone, you should discover ways of adding new depth to your work. No prior experience with photography is necessary.

This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.

In our one-day intensive course, participants will embark on a journey through four distinct modules, each lasting 1.25 hours, that cover both the theory and practice of Therapeutic Photography. We begin with an Introduction to Therapeutic Photography, where you will learn about the origins, key theories, and the distinction between related practices like phototherapy.

This practical module ensures that participants can handle equipment and techniques with confidence, applying them in ways that foster deep personal and subject reflection.

Our third module, Therapeutic Photography in Practice, delves into real-world applications, showcasing how this method has been successfully implemented in various settings. Through case studies and interactive discussions, you will understand the dynamics of photo-elicitation, self-portraiture, and the critical ethical considerations that ensure respect and confidentiality.

Helping any coach deepen their practice in various ways: enhancing intervention skills, better understanding clients’ needs, drawing on evidence, exploring attitudes to work/clients, and expanding client bases and professional standing.

This course promises to be an exciting departure from traditional advanced programmes that generally offer intense immersion in one particular model but do little to help the coach develop their own practice in ways that are critical to them.

You may be a business, life, sports, health, or financial coach; work in corporate, private or public sectors; with in-house, external, or assigned clients (paying or provided with your services for nothing); with years of experience, or just be beginning. Whatever your situation, your practice will be deepened and developed as a result of attending.

The course is particularly suited to students who have completed an initial coaching programme, whether recently or some time ago, and are keen to expand their practice.

Over ten weeks, you will be supported as you develop plans, identify key areas, gain peers to work alongside, and be guided and encouraged as you put those plans into practice.

There will be opportunities to enhance your intervention skills, better understand clients’ needs, draw on evidence rather than hearsay, explore your own attitudes to work and clients, expand client numbers, and build your professional standing.

This course on the history and evolution of counselling and psychotherapy offers a comprehensive exploration of key theoretical developments and their practical applications over time. Starting with early philosophical influences and moving through major movements such as psychoanalysis, behaviourism, and cognitive therapies, the course emphasizes a pragmatic and experiential learning approach.

Students engage through resources on a VLE, lectures, critical discussions, and case studies, applying historical insights to contemporary issues and practices. The course aims to equip students with a strong understanding of the field’s foundations and the skills to critically analyze and anticipate future trends in psychotherapy.

While a background in counselling or psychotherapy is not required, practising counsellors will find that this is an exciting alternative for their CPD.

  • Course: “Contemporary Developments in Coaching”

    Course: “Contemporary Developments in Coaching”

    01/02/25 – Oxford – Saturday 09:45am to 5:00pm

More Information & To Book (do so quickly as places fill FAST)

Coaching draws on insights from psychology, sociology, anthropology and education to inform its practice. Ideas can also come from applied studies – such as health coaching, finance coaching, and executive development. Committed coaches keep ‘up to date’ through CPD, but with so many fields to monitor this can be a challenge. Many coaches don’t have access to academic literature, let alone the time to scan such a broad range of topics. This one-day event helps bridge this gap.

Currently, four key areas will be explored: the qualities of the coach, improving the coaching process, the coaching relationship and the nature of the client. We will adapt the programme if new themes emerge.

During the day, participants will review a dozen pre-selected references, pool their interpretations and relate these findings to their own coaching practices. Rather than passive lectures, this is an opportunity to learn from a diverse group of practitioners and dig into published evidence together.
